Tony Christie - Is This the Way to Amarillo?

No! This time he’s wending his way to Dublin, Limerick, Tullamore and Carrickfergus. 44 years after the release of his million-selling hit “Amarillo”, Tony Christie rounds off his long career with a nostalgic trip to his family’s Irish roots – and has produced an Irish folk album of the very highest musical and audio quality. For this project he was able to acquire the services of the band “Ranagri”, who have worked with such international luminaries as Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder and Ennio Morricone.

12 of the most beautiful Irish folk classics including for instance „Wild Mountain Thyme“ and „Carrickfergus“, were recorded by Christie and the band in the grammy-nominated Stockfisch Studio in Northeim, where producer Günter Pauler has earned an international reputation for the unusually high sound-quality of his work.

This album is not an idiosyncratic whim dreamed up over a few “jars” at the local pub, but brings to light an aspect of Tony Christie the artist (real name: Anthony Fitzgerald) which many won’t have expected. The songs have profited immensely from the contemporary arrangements, making the “golden oldies” shine with a new brilliance.

Various successful albums tipped the vote away from naming the production „Simply in Love with Irish Music“ or alternatively „Made in Northeim“. Quite deservedly, this album has been called „The Great Irish Songbook” – the current album of the „Great Irish Singer“ Tony Christie.

Tony Christie einmal ganz anders!

"Is this the way to Northeim?" wird der damals 72-jährige, berühmte britische Tenor Tony Christie gefragt haben, als er in 2014 auf Einladung der Gruppe Ranagri in die niedersächsische Kleinstadt gereist ist, um im dortigen Tonstudio von Soundspezialist Günter Pauler die Idee des "Great Irish Song Book" zu realisieren.

Das Ergebnis liegt hier vor und kann sich hören und sehen lassen:

Hören, weil es eben genau dort produziert wurde und die Brillanz der Aufnahme an sich wieder einmal atemberaubend gut ist. Außerdem wurde eine wunderbare Auswahl an traditionellen, irischen Folksongs getroffen, die perfekt in Szene gesetzt und stimmungsvoll instrumentiert wurden. Sehen lassen kann sich das Album, bzw. das 30-seitige Booklet, welches schön bebildert, umfangreiche Informationen zum Projekt und die Texte zu den 12 Liedern liefert.

Tony Christie, den ich bis dato immer eher der musikalisch leichten Unterhaltung ("Amarillo") zugeordnet hatte, beweist hier auf Vortrefflichste das er große Qualitäten als Sänger hat und verleiht den Songs eine ganz spezielle Note.
Besonders herausragend finde ich den Gesang und das Arrangement bei Klassikern wie "Star of the county down", oder "Wild mountain thyme". "She moved through the fair" ist eine Stockfisch typische Gänsehautnummer, die durch ihr basslastiges Arrangement ganz tief berührt und ordentlich wummert.

Die vierköpfige Band Ranagri, um den Sänger, Gitarristen und Songwriter Donal Rogers veröffentlichten bereits mit "Fort of the hare" ein Debütalbum bei Stockfisch Records. Sie haben sich aber schon einige Jahre zuvor bereits durch Gast- und Supportauftritte, u.a. bei Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder und den Chieftains einen Namen gemacht und sich in der Folk-Szene etabliert.

"The Great Irish Song Book" ist ein gelungenes Album, welches bestimmt nicht nur bei Fans von Tony Christie, oder von irischer Folkmusik, Anerkennung und Bewunderung erhalten wird.

Ein Klang Tipp so schreibt eine Fachzeitung.
Ich teile die Meinung. Eine wunderbare SACD von Stockfisch/In-Akustik.
Die Stimme von Tony Christie in Verbindung mit den Musiker von Ranagri ist hervorragend.
Diese SACD ist für mich eine besondere Aufnahme mit schönen Klangfarben und toller Technik produziert.
Ich kann diese CD uneingeschränkt empfehlen.
